    Am a songwriter, have written over 120 songs at least. After all this time I’ve realized my best stuff is without my ego in the way. One project I did was kinda a spiritual/religious type thing and I just took myself out of the equation and tried to make myself a vessel for god/angels to use me to get this music, and it really worked. This was 12-14 years ago. Not that my new ones aren’t good there’s just a disconnect in the sense that back then everything I wrote wrote itself as opposed to me thinking oh it needs this and that.

    I found this video quite delightful, it's FUN Watching someone else do this tedious task! I usually run at least 12 vocal tracks, cause to be perfectly honest with you, i can't sing worth a fucking shit on a recording. But i do have a good tonal quality to my voice. So i'll pick 1 or 2 words, then 3 or 5 words off of each track until i make it sounds like i can sing. 🙂

    If you are mixing a song where there are acapella parts, or close to acapella, do you automate the EQ to return some of the low-mids during those parts?

    Found this very interesting. I use a Neumann 87 mic for my vocal and I’ve never used EQ on it. I’ve always just allowed it, with my vocal, like an elephant, to sit wherever it likes and I’ll fit the rest of the track around it - but then I don’t do mixes either - I mix as I go. Sounds like I might be missing a trick - Never too old to learn

    You just opened my eyes after 3 months of pain trying to fit vocals in my song, I didn't even know what I was doing. with your instant demonstration using your own voice to make actual sounds that represent those problematic points on eq spectrum is so simple but it's exactly what opened my eyes. And compression, turned out all this time I needed to know why I need compression at all, and you showed that perfectly too. And also using de-esser after compression, I can't believe I put attack at 1 on compressor because just one day hearing all those unwanted sounds from month an esses. My de-esser was at the beginning of the chain. And also when you boosted that low mid-mid to show that boxy sound and high mids to show nasal, it was like a thousand needles put through my head because I heard this sound all these months constantly every day, because without it my vocals kept drowning in mix, and it actually problem with other instruments that I need to solve. I have cheap monitor headphones and earbuds, the next big thing I need to buy is definitely expensive monitor headphones. I hope I didn't damage my ears and I hope I stop being so stubborn

    Thank you for the video. I may try a bit of higher mid removal on a vocal I am working on now which has a similar sound as you referred to in this video. For vocal compression I use a 1176 style compressor set to 1 to 2 db of reduction, and then an LA2A style of compressor set to 6 to 7 db of reduction. Also, referencing tracks while I'm mixing is essential to me. I'm still learning, but these techniques have worked for me. Cheers.

    I was watching from a spoken word perspective. Interesting that the devil frequency is 2.6kHz - the Sennheiser MKH 416, one of the most popular spoken word mics of all time, has a pretty sharp peak at 2.5kHz. It helps with clarity of diction, and gives it its distinct sound. A -3dB notch makes it sound like a regular condenser. I guess we now know why it's not used for singing!

  • @ErkanS13
    @ErkanS13 4 дні тому

    But why don't you touch on the subject of why not always have the lowest possible gain on the preamp if you can always turn it up later? There must be some reason for having to go for a balance... Seems like you missed this part to make this video complete. Say I play the bass, and the low B will clip unless the gain is really low but then the recorded signal on say the D string is very low (if I line directly and don't use a compressor). This means I sometimes must sacrifice some clip on some low B-string notes. Or can I just minimize the preamp gain?! But phanks :)

    • @HomeStudioCorner
      @HomeStudioCorner 4 дні тому

      In that situation I would choose to not clip. Low volume doesn't hurt anything.

    • @ErkanS13
      @ErkanS13 3 дні тому

      @@HomeStudioCorner Okay! Thanks alot for your answer, didn't expect it to be honest! Finally I have something to go on in this question. I'm still trying to figure out if there's ever a reason to gain it "perfectly" so to speak so that every highest peak is just below clipping level and now the only reason I can think of is if you like the character of the sound a specific preamp has, but, then again, one could always reamp/reline something to get this, right? Thanks Joe, your vids are always helpful. You seem to have an awesome job :)
